Cena, Show, Disco
A friend here, who works with Chris (another volunteer) at his placement in Buenos Aires, had her birthday this past week. One of her birthday traditions is to give her friends a gift on her birthday, so she decided to take her friends out for dinner on Thursday. She invited Chris, Cristina and me to be a part of this. Argentines don't usually eat dinner until 9:30/10:00. We were to meet at our friend's house in the Capital at 9:30. We arrived around 9:45. Some of her other friends were already there. We hung out talking and having snacks until around 11:00 when we loaded up in cabs to go to dinner. We didn't actually eat dinner until a little after midnight.
I was told we were going to dinner and what time to be there, so I was thinking we were going to a restaurant and having dinner. Turned out it was dinner, show, and disco. The show was a magician/comedian and they guy used a number of people from the audience in his acts. It was hilarious! After the show, the music came on, tables were cleared away and we danced. One of the guys in our group said that this place was a popular place for birthdays (there were 3 or 4 groups there celebrating birthdays on Thursday).
I don't know if we were the only 3 Yankees in the place that night, but I wouldn't be surprised if we were. There were people from other Latin American countries (based on where the volunteers on stage during the show said they were from). I felt comfortable though and didn't feel like I stood out (until we started dancing - Latin Americans know how to dance!). I understood everything and we were with a group of Argentines. I felt like I belonged. It was fun meeting new people and getting a taste of the Argentine night life. It was special that Sari was so thoughtful to include me in her birthday tradition because we had only met a few times before this week.
